Golden evening in the golden bear state, doing justice to all the many songs. I've never seen this part of the world so lush and vibrantly green (not that evident from this shot but there'll be more to come). Did my bit for the northerly brethren by staying in the Pacific for too long in naught but shorts. Busted some beautiful trails, met some wonderful folks, got the chance to spread what good words I could, and beheld many a pretty sight.

Tionne, Lisa, and Chilli, the gals of TLC, had it completely wrong when they bid us not go chasing waterfalls.

Find them, bathe in them, chant in them, dance in them. ALWAYS go chasing waterfalls.

The best I’ve yet found are in Scotland (no surprises there), New Zealand, Norway, and Iceland. Found some mighty fine numbers in Ethiopia and Brazil, but I’m missing the mighty beasts of southeastern Africa and the titans of Latin America.

As some of us Northern Hemispherers have begun to see the first blossomy signs of spring, I thought I’d leap ahead a few months to meadows of Alpine flowers just to get the yearnings a’stirring. Little doggie upon a kindly-placed mid-mountain perch finds herself in the Alps of westernmost Austria whilst the gold-specked meadow afore the riven rockfaces finds herself in the foothills of the Dolomites’ Lavaredo range. All kinds of mesmeric green goodness whose floral delights linger into the late vestiges of July.

We’ve heard of her, we know she’s there, that wondrous myriad of islands, that vessel of tumultuous historical import, expertly crafted, still afloat. Encountering her in the lean mean winter season has its benefits. A stillness and tranquility rendered by low, stirring light, and of course, being beset by but a smattering of her summer befalling. Given this is Valentine’s week we might as well give a plug for the city of Casanova. After all the nunneries and everything he is SUPPOSED (italics intended) to have met ‘the one’ and settled down, so couples of Instagram, make of that what you will and as you sip your negroni from a Venetian glass tumbler, a’gondola’d, let your eyes wander.. the buildings are pretty too.

Thanks to my phone doing a Humpty Dumpty number, I thought I’d lost yonks of painstakingly (pretty pleasurably to be fair) gathered content, but thanks to that crafty old cloud, I can pester with posts once more.

Sliabh Liag, also known ad Slieve League, in county Donegal, Ireland’s northwestmost, is thought to be among all of Europe’s highest and indeed most splendid seacliffs. I’ve been to the Cliffs of Moher further south, and whilst obviously striking, they positively teem with tourists (there’s a whopper of a visitors’ centre and a mammoth car park), whereas at Donegal’s answer I barely saw so much as another soul, a few sheep aside. Beyond the magnificent treasures these cliffs hopefully appear to be from this photo, the northerly stretch of the Wild Atlantic Way is one blessed with white sands, silvery beaches, truly wondrous characters, villages that look as if from another time, a ferociously entertaining Gaelic Football community, some of the greatest weavers in the world, and needless to say, tremendous pubs.

Combine a visit to Donegal with a wiggle around the endlessly dramatic Dingle Peninsula and in between the two, the coast and islands of County Mayo, _and_ romantic lakescape (loughscape ☘️) of Connemara, and you’ve a belter of an Irish holiday.

Ever so pretty and highly effective way to shed some December and storm, albeit with not especially rapid abandon, into January. Cold, crisp, and unendingly beautiful. The Engadin’s side-valleys hold historic treasures, tranquil forests, and lead to glaciers, waterfalls, rivers, and remote restaurants with roosteries. Pound away, shred it up, feast your senses, reload the beans. The contrast of the not yet frozen lakescape against the icy-smooth trails and snow-bedecked trees was a treat to behold. Like to think we do mountain escapes none too shabbily.

Frozen everything… the nostrils were second most amusing to the bristles which managed to freeze themselves together above and below lip a few times. Langlaufing through an arctically beautiful arboreal treasure trove of tranquility, stream still trickling alongside, sun breaking through the odd snow-laden branch at a cool but mercifully not too breezy -15°. Mother would have approved of this one. Very few posts of ours would be complete without some sort of twilight capture so we've been sure to include one here.

Stills from two mountain demesnes of differing elevations both of which we'll be revisiting this year. The first is from a video taken above the Khumbu Icefall between Everest Base Camp and Camp 1, an undoubtedly extraordinary way to glimpse the Great Mother Goddess. We'll head back to Nepal in late October to soar about these giants of the Himalayas once more. ⁠

The second is taken at the far end of a deep side-valley of the Engadin, reachable on foot, seal-skin, and cross-country ski. An area of secrets, secluded idylls, and endless charms. We're here now, as it happens.⁠
